Liverpool
It's not all just about football, Cilla Black and The Beatles. Welcome to 2025's Modern Mega Manor: a few days in Liverpool. Possible highlights on this four night trip include the Liverpool Museum, The Cavern, a brewery/prosecco tour and, of course, a ferry... cross the Mersey. A traditional Walk 'n' Talk may also be on the cards. How many Cape-Connections does Liverpool have to unveil? More details to come but the key info is out: provisional dates and place.
Meet in Liverpool.

Guests welcome.

- Monday
Colin, Phil, Martin, Helena, Anne and Steve met in the Pump House on Albert Dock, early afternoon, having spent the morning travelling on various trains from Stirling and Edinburgh to Liverpool. Everyone was due to check-in at the same hotel and agreed spending £15 each on three pints was a much better idea than £15 for pre-3p.m. check-in. Having exercised this excellent piece of wisdom before dropping-off bags, it was time to explore the local area: Liverpool Docks, Pier Head and the Three Graces. Helena, Steve and Anne watched the Regal Princess (Hamilton) cruise ship ready itself for departure and blast a big-horn-ditty across the city. Time for a bit of tea in the Liverpool bar where Colin and Steve had some scouse (stew) and Phil was disappointed there was no mash left! to go with the bangers and so settled for a chicken curry. Opinions on the barman's general demeanor and attitude were split so the MMM team did the same: split. It was agreed we'd head for the Lion Tavern which looked like it had a nice, traditional feel. Knights and Ladies were rewarded for their 10 minute saunter with a beautiful wood and tiled bar: a small scale version of Leith's Central Bar. It'd been a long day, so after this the assembled company agreed it was time to retire: off to bed.

- Tuesday
The morning was a free-for-all to give Derran time to join in Stevie's Scouser Walkie-Talkie so Knights and Ladies did their own thing, including a wander through the Ropewalks district, breakfast at the 'disco spoons' (The Lime Kiln) and a visit to Chinatown. Martin also took the opportunity to go model-hunting in Birkenhead. (Not the page-three kind: the Sun newspaper is banned.) Derran arrived early afternoon, having been smitten bitten by "The Sausage", and the MMM crew gathered at the Liver Building for the start of Stevie's Scouser Walkie-Talkie. There was a lot to go through, including Sir Owlet's (John Rennie) bridge, press-gangs, slaves, privateers, Leith pirates, Knight Street (Grapes Pub), Leith Trinity House connections, Sir Hermione (James Watt), Gladstone (born in Leith, Tory and slave-owner), Doctor Bell's Leith school connections, The Cavern Club and Martin's 'wee-boy-slave' bank. When most of the walkie-talkie was said and done, it was time to head straight to FOGO Brazil for an evening meat-feast. Full to the gunnels, Steve, Colin, Derran and Colin had a couple of Knight caps and game of pool in McCartney's and Albert's Schenke (the less said about the practicality of a Laphroaig in a tall skinny shot glass the better) before heads hit pillows.

- Wednesday
Wednesday set sail in fine fashion with a Ferry 'cross the Mersey and some great river views of the city and ventilation towers which keep the tunnels under the river aerated. We even saw a little sunshine which had been forecast for the whole trip but which we saw little of. Still, at least it was relatively warm and stayed dry. Disembarking the ferry was followed by a walk to Doctor Duncan's pub (nephew of an Edinburgh doctor) for a bite to eat and viewing of some more splendid, traditional pub architecture. St George's Hall was just around the corner so Steve suggested a quick visit on the off-chance of a sighting of Frederick Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, the man responsible for ice-hockey's Stanley Cup. The plan worked to perfection thanks to the very helpful Jean at St George's Hall who was good enough to give the Cape an impromptu tour, including the statue of Frederick and his dad. Needless to say, one-puck-too-far-Phil was very pleased with this. A wander around St John's park for some was followed by a short shopping trip to Resurrection in Bold Street and drinks outside Soho bar, along with the screaming wains; then another stop at Derran's favourite: Albert's Schenke. It was soon agreed Chinatown should feed Knights and Ladies that night and Man Tsuen Ho's restaurant filled the bill. Colin considered sending a dental bill for his seafood nest/basket but, generally, the food was good. The Pump House back at Albert Dock provided that evening's Knight cap.

- Thursday
Another comfortable and relaxed start to the day found the MMM crew heading for Liverpool Central metro station to meet up with Martin before heading for Blundellsands & Crosby. Everyone was unhappy with seating on the train so changed from the one bound for Omskirk to one bound for Southport. 😜 This theme od musical chairs repeated with much hilarity over many different pub tables during the MMM. We walked to the Edinburgh Inn in Crosby and admired many old photographs of Auld Reikie on the walls but the barman was unable to throw any light on the origins of the pub name. (It's possible it was once owned by Robert Cains who started brewing in the Scotland Road area, so named because it was the main stagecoach route to Scotland. He owned the Vines, Dr Duncan's and The Central at points and seems to have been renowned for pubs with very ornamental interiors.) Phil was pleased with the picture of the Tolbooth Tavern: the site of his initiation in to the Cape Society. Another 10-15 minute wander found the MMM masses at Crosby beach where a major sand-shifting operation was on the go and we wandered around a few of the 100 Antony Gormley statues whilst enjoying the sea-air and the wind-farm view. A Mr Whippy ice-cream from the Soul Man wound-up a great day trip from Liverpool city centre. Some drinks and cocktails at the impressive Vines preceded the immersive light show, Eonarium FLOW, back at St George's Hall. A wander past the many live Irish bar acts on Great Charlotte Street led to Alberts Schloss and then around the corner to a lovely meal at Villa Romana. Colin said, if anything, his pizza was, "too rich"! The former church now named St Peter's Tavern was the next and very dim, candle-lit stop before, for the final time, Derran's favourite, Albert's Schenke treated a few hardcore Knights to a farewell to Liverpool. A toast was proposed by Martin and welcomed by Steve for all the research which added some welcome meat to the MMM (over and above that provided by FOGO Brazil).

- Friday
Derran made his way for a train to Manchester and flight to Copenhagen while everyone else went looking for train packed-lunches and ended up on the 12.39 from Preston back to Edinburgh. Fond farewells were expressed and the Modern Mega Manorers headed home.

Thanks to all Knights and Ladies who attended this year's Modern Mega Manor in Liverpool, especially Dez who trecked a tedious route from Aarhus to Liverpool and back: a committed Worthy Sovereign and Companion Knight.
