Knights were outnumbered 14 to nine by guests at this Turtle Feast. All 23 met in the bar on the second floor of the Overseas League and enjoyed a few drinks before Neil called the company to order and everyone meandered downstairs to the first floor where dinner would be served. Martin opened formal proceedings by welcoming Knights and guests before Neil said grace. This was swiftly followed by Davy's toast to Cape, Grand Cape and Herbert (and comical reference to a lack of 'eminent' Knights). It was then time to exercise the vocal chords for the first time in the evening: the Soup Song. Unfortunately, there was no musical accompaniment but Knights and guests sung the soup proud. Colin gave a great and energetic address to the turtle before the evening meal was server. There was a choice of duck or soup to start. Chicken and haggis or pork for a main and lemon tart or profiteroles for pudding. Once done, Martin cracked on with proceedings and asked Neil to toast absent Knights which he did with customary flare. Dez thanked and toasted the guests who made a fantastic contribution to the evening (not least in raising £70 in a raffle won by James and Lez: whisky galore!) and one of Neil's guests, Bill, gave a fine, rousing reply, thanking the Cape Society for its hospitality. It seemed about the right time of the evening to bellow out the drinking song which was done with aplomb. Davy then fired straight in to McGonagall (thankfully, a short choice of poem some might say) before Steve toasted Davy as Worthy Grand Sovereign. Davy replied and George relayed the Cape's warm appreciation of the staff who served Knights and guests so well all evening. A small token of the Society's appreciation was given to one of the staff, Andy. Auld Lang Syne, The Loyal Toast and thanks to Martin for organising and conducting the evening rounded off the thoroughly enjoyable programme. Knights and guests mingled and chatted (and some even ventured on to the scaffolding!) until the bar closed at 1pm: another resoundingly successful evening. Thanks again to all who attended, especially the guests: Bill & Rose, Carol, Craig & Eva, Darren, Helene, James & Leslie, Kirsty, Laura, Mary, Morag and Sanne. The spurtles have all been put away but we'll see you all with them out again next year!
