It is stipulated that you must don your glad rags, plus have a go at concocting your own turtle soup recipe. As for the wine fund? For reasons deserving of resignation to the annals of history, the 2020 Turtle Feast took place via 'satellite' video-link. Various households joined from locations across Europe: Denmark, Scotland's Border region, Edinburgh and Stirling all participated in another boisterous but less well-connected and less intimate feast. Karsten, Hana, Karla, Derran, Helene, Martin, Mary, Colin, Phil, Terry, Gogs, Kirsty, bigger Colin, Dave, Carol, Helena, Kirsteen, Helen, Anne, Rob and Steve all donned glad rags and made spurltles at the ready to honour Herbert the turtle for another year. 21 bodies in all: almost in-keeping with usual numbers despite the absence of some regular faces. Every household made varying degrees of effort to recreate a true Turtle Feast environment in their home and this included some turtle napkins, the appearance on-screen of Herbert, some delicious mock turtle soup and turtle cake, as well as a full Turtle Feast programme with singing 'n' all! The evening ran-off perfectly in keeping with the programme before the fairly usual ensuing degree of degeneration and the cup of conviviality started to overflow, particularly in Leith. Terry used his Toast to Absent Knights to make the poignant point that all Knights were in a sense absent on this occasion. Circumstances leading to closure of public space inevitabley throttled back the convivial atmosphere of the evening but the society persevered and made the best of the resources and invention within its power.
