The Cumberland BarThe Scotch Malt Whisky Society, Queen Street between 19:30 and 20.00. The tour will begin at 20.00, i.e. we'll be leaving The Cumberland Bar at 20.00 so only order a pint at 19.55 if you're prepared to down it in five minutes!

- There was a bit of disruption prior to the start of this Manor which was originally advertised as kicking-off in The Cumberland Bar, later changed to The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) and ended up with the starting pistol fired from the Hannover Tap. (Unfortunately, the SMWS was fully booked.) Apologies to anyone who missed out by turning up there or the Cumberland. Anne, Helena, Mark, Martin, Colin and Steve all set out into a fine Auld Reikie evening and made a few stops in between Kay's Bar and the Wally Dug for some highlights about the history of the New Town, including its birth with James Craig and development down the hill, past phase two's Royal Circus and down the steps at the foot of India Street to Stockbridge. We heard about the royal nature and British Empire influence in many of the street names, why the proposed George Square was named Charlotte Square, paused at Heriot Row, visited Jamaica Street with its lanes lined with mews stables, looked in on the birth place of James Clerk Maxwell and admired the steeple of St Vincent's Chapel. A summer wander around Edinburgh's New Town is always a delight and this meander lived up to expectation. Knights and guests wandered along expensive Northumberland street (£600-800K) then enjoyed a couple of drinks in the Wally Dug before heading home. Thanks to those who came along and joined Martin's insight in to some of Edinburgh's New Town.
