A packed-house and lack of free seats at the Malt & Hops persuaded Steve, Anne and Helena to go off in search of alternative informal meeting venues. Only Martin and Phil were 'in the house' at this point.
Good on the Malt & Hops for drawing in the crowds on, traditionally, one of the quietest pub days of the year.
Steve and and Helena found plenty room at the recently rebranded, Belhaven-owned, Three Monks (formerly the Sandport Tavern and Barologist before that). One drink in the 3 Monks was sufficient time for dust to clear in the Malt & Hops where Martin engineered a 'corner takeover', whereupon Steve, Anne and Helena left their spacious and quiet 10-seater table to dash through the heavy rain back to M&H. By this time, Colin, Dave, Rob, Mark and Alex had all joined the throng and the conviviality and hilarity, probably topped by Martin's Ernst Stavro Blofeld impression (at the expense of Anne's fashion sense), began to reach full-flow. The Cape in full-flow was obviously too much for the Gen-Z, "stay woke" barmaid who felt the need to offer everyone a round of pints of water (under veiled threat of expulsion) as the night (and Phil's exuberance) wore on.
